Dear YouTube,

In the immortal words of Neil Sedaka “Breaking up is hard to do”

Especially when you have been a long time supporter and don’t understand what happened. We’ve been together for years now, and

  • I’ve uploaded over 125 educational videos to you
  • Recommended and taught thousands of students to create video for you
  • Brought you over 550+ subscribers to my “jeffherring” account
  • Included you as an integral part of our Social Marketing Blueprint
  • Use my Social Media sites to drive an enormous amount of traffic to my
    YouTube Videos
  • And enjoyed our relationship

So imagine my surprise when on Saturday 6/18 I checked in to upload another video only to find the message that my account had been terminated for violations of Community Guidelines.

What is really confusing is the email I received late last night in response to my email:

Regarding Penalty 1 –  the amusing thing is that the person who flagged that video is my wife’s ex-husband, who at the time in July of ’09, over 2 years ago, was not happy that his ex-wife had moved to Atlanta, even thought they had been divorced for years. Interestingly, he is now our nutritional counselor, and he’ll be contacting you to explain the reasons behind his complaint in 2009. I still don’t know what the violation was…

Regarding Penalty 2 – I’ve read through your Community Guidelines, etc several times and watched the video several times, and cannot seem to find any violations. I’ve included a copy of the video here:

Also, as I read your Guidelines, the first penalty expires in 6 months, which would have ended in the beginning of ’10.

As I send a tremendous amount of traffic to my YouTube Videos on YouTube and on my blog, you can imagine the shock that has been felt by my many followers and fans, as well as the perception this creates with the accompanying damage to reputation.

If I’ve done something wrong, please tell me, and it will be corrected. All my content is original educational content, and I teach the many members of my list community to do the same.

Here’s hoping that soon we will be celebrating our reunion.

  • What a mess that makes. I hope you had everything backed up in AmazonS3 to reload to the web. I’m starting to forsee a big panel on the dangers of using YouTube and other similar services and sites around the web – the dark and scary side of the internet – happening at NAMS in August :-p

    I am so sorry to hear about this…but if I know you, you already have plan B in place and will be implementing it soon, if not already. You are enterprising and a survivor. You have great ideas and creativity that will just allow you to find a different way around any obstacle put before you. That is what I have learned from you and Maritza I think most of all.

    Great article and this is a good lesson for all of us. As you and so many others teach, we need to make sure we are always driving traffic back to the sites we own and storing our content on servers and services that we own.

    Thanks for giving us your insights and for always doing such a great job of teaching and being transparent, even in the face of adversity. It’s what makes you who you are!

    Just a note to say how grateful and appreciate I am of all your kind words and support.

    As of this writing (Sunday afternoon, 6/26/11) the account has been down for a week, I’ve filed appeals with YouTube (tho the response to one was the same robot email I had gotten before) and not much progress.

    Tho they did send me a “customer satisfaction survey” for feedback on how I liked their customer service – here’s hoping they read it…

    It would have been more logical to ask you to remove the two videos that supposedly violated the agreement, not deactivate all 125. Hope you get them back up soon.
